About Martin

I help leadership teams see what their everyday behaviour is teaching people, and change it before it becomes expensive.

My background

I've spent around 30 years in and around IT. I started in the Army as an analyst programmer on a mainframe, picking up whatever other IT-related tasks needed doing along the way.

Over time my work moved from systems to people. At Crossrail I helped deliver the "Behaviour Influences Behaviour" programme (2013–2015), and I went on to be Lead Trainer at FDM's Glasgow and Leeds Academies (2016–2019). That meant years in rooms full of people, watching how small, repeated behaviours shape what a team believes is safe, expected and normal.

Where Behavioural Debt came from

Anyone who's worked in software knows technical debt: the shortcut that works today and makes everything harder tomorrow. I'd been interested in behavioural and positive psychology for years, and I kept seeing the same pattern in leadership. A manager steps in, a decision gets pushed upwards, a concern gets brushed aside. Each one solves today's problem and quietly teaches people something. That accumulated learning is Behavioural Debt.

I explore the governance side of this in my book, Structural Silence: how organisations lose critical signals before risk becomes visible.

Why Chattervision

Chattervision started as a way to keep my mind occupied. It's become something I care about a great deal, and today I'd genuinely like to make a difference to how organisations are led.

Who I work best with

Open-minded people who want to grow themselves and their people. If you're curious about what your leadership habits are teaching, and willing to look honestly at the answer, we'll get on well.
